Best Online Digital Photo Printing Services: What to Look For

When I am searching for the best online photo printing service, I look for sites that are uncomplicated with a range of creative choices, good customization and prices that won’t break my budget. But there are so many photo companies on the web and prices and features vary widely, it can be confusing to know which one to use. This article will give you some tips on how to find a top digital photo printer.

Features

Increasingly, online photo services do much more than just photo processing. One can order a remarkable array of photo items, from photobooks to custom cards, blankets, mugs and so on. For example, [amazon_link id="0072261668" target="_blank" ]Shutterfly[/amazon_link] makes an awesome array of customizable photo gifts.

These days the best online digital photo printing services provide integration with social media as well. A number of photo sites offer members the ability to upload from [amazon_link id="B005VI0WC2" target="_blank" ]Facebook[/amazon_link] or other social media sites as well as create web albums for sharing with friends. Several photo sites, including [amazon_link id="6134925713" target="_blank" ]Kodak Gallery[/amazon_link] and [amazon_link id="0072261668" target="_blank" ]Shutterfly[/amazon_link],feature private group share sites.

Prices

Since costs can vary quite a bit, comparing several different photo companies may pay off. I’ve found regularly-priced 4×6 inch prints for 8 cents and I’ve seen them as high as 27 cents, which is quite a variation. Yet typically it costs less than using your home printer, which may cost from 27-50 cents or more per print, based upon printer model and ink and paper costs. With regard to online digital photo processors, you don’t necessarily have to pay the most to get good quality. There are several online photo printing services such as Snapfish that offer cheap prices and high quality prints.

Some time ago I wrote a blog post called “Turn Ho-Hum Color into WOW! with Photoshop” which involved using the LAB color space to adjust an image. In the interests of those of you who use Gimp, this blog post is a revisit on the topic of dragging color out of lackluster images this time using Gimp.

One of the hidden secrets of Gimp is that it supports the LAB color space so you can get access to the L, a and b channels in an image. This adjustment therefore produces similar results to those you can achieve with my earlier post using Photoshop it’s just that the process in Gimp is a little different. Read more »
